A 58 year old man taking part in a race event called the 'Krispy Kreme Challenge' died yesterday in North Carolina. During the event participants are required to run 2.5 miles, consume 12 donuts, and then run another 2.5 miles back to the starting location. The man reported started having chest pain after running the first mile. Shortly thereafter he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Krispy Kreme Challenge was an event fundraiser to benefit the UNC Children's Hospital.
Event organizers released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones." No word on if the event will continue on next year or if any other similar events will be held elsewhere.
